5. Google News

Google News is a free news aggregator site that is made available by Google. It is basically a computer-generated news site that aggregates headlines from thousands of news sources worldwide by an automatic aggregation algorithm. It then groups similar stories together and then displays them according to each reader’s personalised interest.

I read somewhere that Google News was developed as a direct consequence of the heartbreaking situations of 9/11. Apparently, Google awakened to the fact its users needed a means to gain access to fresh news and not just publications from related websites which had been indexed months ago.

The fact that the news you get from Google News makes it easy for you to take advantage of it by leveraging the hype all around fresh news reports. Google news allows you to choose the subject line you are interested in. Therefore, as a marketer, if you are not using Google News……I think it’s time you start tapping into it as it is an excellent platform to discover information that are highly relevant to your business.

Such information can then be used to create written content for your website. As you do this, people will begin to see you as a person of authority ….you will have competitive advantage over many others – like a trend setter!

Imagine the effect if you read a publication for example,….announcing the result of a survey carried out about an aspect of your industry……I think this will be a great opportunity to write a blog post! Once you create your post…..remember this is fresh NEWS and at such will very likely be picked by other bloggers, journalists etc who are in search of the same topic.

How to get started:

  • Go to News.Google.com
  • Key in a term related to your industry
  • Various news headlines related to your search will come up, now pick the most recent result that is of interest or most relevant to your business.
  • Now that you have this information….it is time to start brainstorming for content ideas around the topic.
  • Create written content, video etc for your website.

6. Google Reader

Google Reader is another free tool from Google that helps subscribers to stay up to date with their favourite websites. It is actually a feed reader that lets users sign up for various RSS or Atom feeds such that one could browse the feeds in one location.

As a marketer it will help you to continue to keep up-to-date with what’s going on inside your industry. In addition, it is a great platform for developing content ideas and participating with your community in industry-related discussions.

It is a tool that can save you time as it allows you to quickly filter through news stories, blog posts, videos and other content relevant to your industry. You can control feeds, label them, as well as promote your feed selection with other people.

If you are just starting out with blogging, it is very important that you follow other blogs as it will help you in creating content ideas and build valuable relationships as you take part in discussions – like blog commenting.

How to get started:

  • Go to Reader.Google.com
  • Sign up for free account and start subscribing to your industry blogs/sites. If you are new to blogging, it is best you start by subscribing to five blogs per day so you don’t get overwhelmed with so much. This is how you subscribe to blogs –
    • go to the blog of interest to you
    • find the little (sometimes big!) orange RSS button on that page and click on it
    • copy the URL and then go to Google Reader and click ‘add subscription’ and then paste the URL there.
  • Whenever the sites you subscribed to updates, you will be able to see the most recent post. Therefore check Google Reader daily
  • Create blog post ideas and keep writing and posting!

7. Google Places

It is said that 97% of consumers actually search for local business online. The days when people go through the yellow pages to find local businesses is rapidly (- if not completely) disappearing.

Google Places is an extremely effective tool that is also offered by Google. It’s a free web page that pulls together all the important bits of your business – your location, reviews, special promotions, link to your website, live update posts and much more. Google Places gets your business found on local search results on both Google Search and Google Maps.

It creates a fantastic avenue for businesses to strengthen an online presence beyond their website. Basically, it makes it so much easier and quicker for potential customers to find you…..such that with Google Places….you are there when people are looking for you!

Provided you register your business on Google Places, when someone searches for your business name or other related terms and location, your listing will have a very high chance of showing up.

For example, if say we are looking to find an event planner in London and you go to Google.com and key in your search term ‘event planner in London’. You will notice in the screenshot below that businesses that are related and listed onGoogle Placeare shown quite high in the search results.

Note that without you specifying the location (i.e. ‘London’), Google has a way of detecting your location – using your IP address and their advanced search algorithms, Google will return with related businesses that are located in the same area as you are at the time of your search.

This is the power of Google Places!

If you have not created your Google Places listing, you need to do so as soon as possible. A free way for you to get listed on the first page of Google…..not sure why any business owner will not want to…..having found out about this valuable tool!

To have an even higher chance of being listed, it is best you ensure you include as much information about your business as possible and also endeavour to optimise for the right keywords as this will help Google to match your listing to more searches.

How to get started:

  • Go to Google.com/Places and register for your FREE account
  • Click ‘Add New Business’ to claim your Google Places listing
  • Verify your information
  • Go back to Google Places and add your business information, ensuring you optimise for the right keywords, add images and other media to engage your audience. Don’t forget links to your websites!

8. Google+

Google+ (pronounced and sometimes written as Google Plus and sometimes abbreviated as G+) is the newest of all the 8 Google Tools in this post – launched on 28th June 2011. It is a social networking and identity service that can help drive valuable social media and search engine traffic to your business website.

In basic terms, Google+ is like an amalgamation of well known web services in one enormous box.

I mean….

Google Plus ? Facebook + Twitter + Skype + Digg + Chatroulette + Foursquare + Blackberry + other similar well known web services that we all use daily.

Therefore, if you are acquainted with the use of any of the above services, I’m quite sure you will find Google Plus pretty painless to use

Below are features that are included in Google+:

  •  Circles

This feature allows you to share whatever matters to you with people that really matters….like a social networking site with privacy! Google+ allows you to organise your connections into circles such that you are able to share content with one or more circles. You can circle or group people into different circles. The best part is that they don’t need to be in your friends list. You can add any one to any circle and receive their updates as a news feed and vice versa.

  •  Hangouts

Hangouts another useful feature that allows you to carry out more than text sharing….you can actually have a video conversation with people in a circle. This feature helps users to build a very strong connection in comparison to just sharing links, texts and images in a stream of updates. According to Google, it’s the best thing on Google+. Hint: if you pay Skype or ooVoo for group video conversations…. HERE is a FREE tool that’s just as good!

  • Sparks

Sparks is similar to Google Reader with the exception of bringing content to you automatically based on your interests. Basically, you add your interests into Google Plus and then Google + will return contents that you want to read about on that specific subject.  Isn’t that what you do on bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Digg, Stumbleupon etc why not do it under one roof…. when you have Sparks?

  •  The +1 Button

Google +1 button allows you to kick start or get conversation going as it allows users of Google Plus to recommend sites and share those

Also if you are a Google Plus user, whenever you do a Google search you will see a small icon (+1 Button) appearing next to each search result and text ad – If you are logged into your Google account. You will also be able to share your links with your associates via your Google mail address book.

According to my sources, websites that install and use Google’s +1 button get 3.5 times more traffic from Google+ than websites that don’t use the button.

How to get started with Google Plus:

  • Go to Plus.Google.com and sign up for a Google+ account.
  • Set up your Profile page.
  • Familiarise yourself with Goole + and the start adding connections and organise your circles.

  • Start sharing content to your circles and continue building your connections!
