Time Management – Is your inbox sub-consciously controlling you?

by Remi Badozi on September 21, 2011

As an internet marketer, are you really in charge of your time management or are your emails managing your time for you? Up until recently, I find myself constantly checking the 100s of emails that drop into my inbox. If I’m not logged onto my laptop, I’m checking them on my blackberry…almost as soon as they arrived!

It has taken a telling off (so to say) by a mentor of mine for me to actually see how much time gets wasted from constantly checking emails and more importantly how I was been subconsciously controlled by my inboxes!

You may not know it…you could be a victim too!

Read on.

Internet marketers all over the world I’m sure will agree with me when I say that our email accounts (especially our inboxes) have somehow become such a big part of our working lives…

As a matter of fact, they are becoming more and more some sort of significant component that is connected with our modern day society. So much so that it is almost impossible to see them for what they really are….CONTROLLERS!

Yes! Our dependable good old inboxes are sub-consciously controlling many internet marketers….rubbing them of valuable times!

You see, they can be likened to the perfect crooks… because hardly anyone would imagine how much they take us away from those important aspects of our marketing efforts. Believe me; they are capable of killing….DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS!

OK, may be you are thinking I am over exaggerating it a little….well, follow me because I have news for you!
The truth is: your inbox is actually nothing more than a good answering machine. The idea is that it records mail messages from people so that you can pay attention to in your own time and respond to them should there be need for response.

Nonetheless, the blunder that most of us make is that we tend to associate our inboxes as some kind of live chat room where there are some extraordinary social gathering that is going on and if you are not there, you’re missing out on some kind of major event!

If you do not manage your time….someone else will manage it for you.

With more and more individuals now working from home, talking on the phone is gradually becoming eroded and with the availability of easy-to-use smart phones….you can easily to see why. I don’t know about you but personally I have quite a few on-and-off….back and forth conversations with friends and colleagues via email.

This is now seriously beginning to bug me….sometimes it can be a problem…

My reason for saying that is because it is so easy for individuals to hide behind the very thin line that is between conversational and non-conversational emails.

And when it does, the non-conversational emails can become a huge distraction.

For example…

You check your inbox and noticed an email from Starbucks offering you two-for-one on cups of coffee balls. Now, this offer is available for the whole week, but because you treat your inbox like a constant conversation, you open it immediately.

Imagine other organisations also sending you emails about their offers. I bet you; majority of us will open each one of those emails! Now, if you do that twenty times a day….you are losing a lot of time! Think TIME MANAGEMENT.

What most people are not aware of is that a distraction does not just last for the few seconds that your attention is diverted…

Rather, it has such a knock-on effect that depending on who you are, it may take you time to refocus….remember where you were….what you were doing or thinking and so on.

Just take a few seconds to imagine how you will feel if you do not get a single email in say about five hours?

I am pretty sure that a number of us will feel a sense of loneliness or isolation a sense that you are being left out of the imaginary party that we somehow believe is taking place in our inboxes. You really should actually be over the moon….

Think about it, instead of your inbox being flooded with a constant string of emails… most of which are rubbish anyway, you can make good use of the silence of your inbox. Use that time wisely…time to think, time to concentrate, time to get some real work done!

I have really being pondering over this issue lately and I realised that we really do treat our inboxes with far too much reverence.

The way I see it is this…

Rather than using your inbox as a tool to record messages from people who wish to get in to contact with you…all too often you act like YOU are the tool designed to help the inbox manage ITS workload!

Before long, if care is not taken you will have become nothing less than a slave race, ruled over by an elite army of parasitic inboxes.

The good news is: if you feel snowed under by your inbox, you don’t need to call in a third party to bail you out.

You see, there is a fundamental weakness built into all inboxes; it is a simple flaw that will allow you to overcome any problem you face regarding your inboxes and you only need a minimal amount of effort.

What is it?

Well, all you have to do is direct your cursor to the top right corner of your inbox (or the top left for Macs), there you will see a red button marked with a telling cross.

Click that cross and magically your inbox closes.

It simply disappears from view….don’t worry: you haven’t killed it!

All you have done is to just reset it to its original, default role: as an answering machine!

When you close your inbox, it becomes nothing more than a tool that allows people to leave you messages that you can pick up whenever it suits you, without being constantly distracted.

So, be in control of your time management without giving room to your inbox to be managing you rather than you managing it…

Be brave, dear reader, and close it for an hour or two…..and get doing those things that need DOING!

You’ll be amazed by the results.

If you really want to take your internet marketing to the next level, it is very import that you know the benefits of time management to your business and how exactly you can manage your time wisely.

If you do not manage your time….someone else will manage it for you.
