Sitemap - help your site visitors and search engines find your content.

For anyone who is marketing on the internet, one of the essential tasks is usually to continually find ways to be and continue to keep on the good side of search engines like Google. Sitemap is one of those techniques that can make Google love your website. Unfortunately many online marketers don’t have Sitemap on their websites and for the few that have it, only a very handful bother to submit their Sitemaps to search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and others.

In today’s post I am going to show you what Sitemap is, why you need it on your website and how you can do simple tweaking to your website in order to gain the respect of search engines like Google. This simple practice will make it easier for your website to get indexed and ranked quickly in the search engines.

What Is A Sitemap and Why the Fuss?

A sitemap is simply a map showing the layout of your website. Having a Sitemap on your site is a way of telling Google and others about pages on your site that might not otherwise be discovered. Simply said, sitemap is a list of the pages on your website.

When you create and submit a Sitemap to search engines, it improves your chances of Google and other search engines knowing about all the pages on your website, together with URLs that may otherwise not be discovered during the usual search engines’ crawling process. Sitemap also help your readers to easily find your site content

There are two types of Sitemaps:

  • HTML Sitemap – a valuable resource for human visitors to your website as it helps them to quickly and easily locate any page within your site. Like I said earlier it is basically a page of your website that outlines the layout of your site contents. HTML Sitemap is also good for SEO purposes as you can have your website pages linking to it and also the HTML linking back to all pages (except your contact page and privacy policy page), enhancing the distribution of link juices between the pages of your website.
  • XML Sitemaps – a simple technique you can use to inform search engines about pages on your website that are available for crawling. XML Sitemap is an XML file that cannot be read by humans but well understood by search engines. It consists of a list URLs for your website together with the metadata (where provided) about each URL. This is another reason why metadata is very important. XML Sitemap allows search engines such as Google can determine when your site as last updated, how often it’s updated, how important your site is and how relative your URLs are in order for search engines to decide how to judiciously crawl your site.

Therefore as you have read above, Sitemaps are very handy because they:

  •  Assist your website visitors to easily notice contents on your site
  •  Make the job of the search engine spiders easier.
  •  Get your pages indexed faster.

How to Generate Sitemaps

If you have a self-hosted WordPress platform, there are quite a number of plug-ins that are available for your use. One of such plug-in that I can recommend is Google XML Sitemaps  by Arnee. This plug-in can automatically create a XML Sitemap for your website and it will also update it every time you add a new page or publish a post to your site. The other plug-in is known as HTML Page Sitemap by  Angelo Mandato. This plug-in allows you to create a HTML Sitemap on your website. All you have to do is download and install both plug-ins and set up

Alternatively, you can follow this simple guide to help you set up your Sitemap:

  •  Go to
  • Enter your full http address for your site.
  • Click the start button to create your sitemap. You may want to wait patiently a short while for your website to generally be crawled.
  • You will be forwarded to the produced Sitemaps. Download both of these Sitemaps: (uncompressed XML sitemap and HTML sitemap)
  • Upload both of these sitemaps to your server.

Therefore, if your website is, having uploaded each sitemaps in your hosting server, your Sitemaps may be like this: and

Now you have to get your HTML version of the Sitemap and hyperlink to it on the footer of your respective website employing “sitemap” as being the anchor text.

For the XML version of the sitemap, you need to submit it to the search engines,
