At the moment, social media is creating a great deal of hype amongst internet marketers and small business owners. More and more Internet marketers are making use of social media to assist them to promote content all over the internet.
A very important factor that I believe is crucial but quite a number of marketers tend to overlook is the planning you must do beforehand in order to be able to effectively promote content on social media sites.

Monitoring Social Media
An essential element of leveraging social media for business is to be aware of what discussions are taking place on the internet in connection with your industry and being able to spot the best point to respond to discussions. Most top earners in the industry use tools to monitor the web for interesting new content and mentions.
Monitoring social media can help you to find out who is saying what, and generally where the conversation is taking place so that you can respond. As your face and name begins to appear all over the place…you are enhancing your branding and marketing tactics.
Listed below are some fantastic tools you can use to conveniently keep track of your company and industry mentions in social media:
Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (from the internet, news, etc.) based on your choice of request and subject matter. This tool can therefore be used as a powerful way of monitoring mentions of your respective brand and related keywords and phrases over the internet – news websites, in blogs , forums, and so on.
Basically you set up a number of Google Alerts for your company, brand, products, leaders, industry terminology, and many others. Whenever there is a mention of your request on the internet, Google Alerts will get the content delivered straight into your email inbox within the rate of recurrence you indicate (it could be daily or as they take place).
Twitter can also be used to keep track of mentions of your respective brand on Twitter. By using tools such as Twitter Advansed Search you can perform some pretty powerful searches.
Once you set up your search, you can save the query as an RSS feed so you can keep up to date on the latest news.
Google Reader and RSS Feeds
Google Reader allows you to follow any site or blog which hasRSS feeds. You are able to classify these feeds as well as promote them to your associates. All you have to do is set up RSS feeds in Google Reader of searches of your brand or industry keywords in other popular social media sites such as Flickr, Digg, Delicious, etc.
You can also scan through the results in your reader daily for mentions…so that you can take appropriate action.
Google Reader also enables someone to effortlessly follow you on your social media accounts such as Twitter. You can connect via Google Reader with other users of Google Reader. You can easily create public profiles on Google Reader…this is particularly excellent for promoting your website or blog.
Facebook Insights allows you to have a glimpse of how many people are engaging with your Facebook Page.
With the recent revamping of the Facebook Insights System, there are two of the new metrics that really gets me excited and can help you see what is going on with your Facebook Page.
Knowing what is going on will help you stay on top of and participate in discussions that are taking place on your Facebook Page.
- People Talking About –Â this measurement tell you how many people are talking about your page. This information will help you gauge what kind of interaction you should be having with your fans.
- Friends of Fans – this metric allows you to know the combined number of friends that all of your fans have. This means that if every one of your fans shared your content all of these friends would have a chance of seeing it. This figure will more than likely prompt you to always encourage your fans to share your content.
Getting Started With Twitter for Business
Twitter is a social network site that allows users to share short (140-characters) messages with each other. Users “follow” or subscribe to each other and therefore can receive messages from each other.
Just like I mentioned earlier, if you are planning on using Twitter for business, it is best to use Twitter’s free search engine, Twitter Advance Search to search for your business, competitors, and industry mentions on Twitter.
If you can understand what people are saying about your business opportunity and industry you will be in a better position to determine if you should invest the time to start and manage a Twitter account.
Assuming you have decided that Twitter is right for you, you should in the first instance visit Twitter.com and set up your free account.
Here are a few tips that will help you as you set up your Twitter account:
- Use your real (or brand) name as your Twitter username.
- Use your own picture (or brand image) as the profile image for the account.
- Use Advanced Twitter Search to help find your industry influencers and follow them. (TOP TIP! Your prospective customers/business partners are more than likely to be following them.)
Using Facebook for Business
With over 750 million people are now using Facebook, I am sure you will agree with me that Facebook is the key player inside the social media industry. Either you believe me or not…your prospects are on Facebook!
Facebook serves as an excellent platform for establishing an online community of promoters for your business enterprise.
There are three main ways you can use Facebook as a great marketing tool for your business and these are:
- To establish a strong profile in order to show people who you are, what you can do, who you can help and what you have to offer.
- To reach out to other people in your industry..NETWORK! To really make those connections by reaching out to others who are out there and share similar interests, and see where you might be able to leverage that and help out both of your businesses.
- To reach your target market. Like I said earlier, YOUR PROSPECTS ARE ON FACEBOOK! One really neat way of connecting with them is to leverage that Facebook feature that allows you see friends of friends.
Those are the three ways to really leverage Facebook to market you well.
The first task in leveraging Facebook for business is to create a Facebook page. A Facebook Page offers a powerful opportunity to connect with your prospective customers. It is a place where you can provide news about your business, share inspiration and so on.
If you don’t have a Facebook Page yet, but would like to create one, just follow the simple steps below.
- You will first need to have a Facebook account before you can create a Page. So, sign in or sign up HERE if you don’t have an account.
- Go here to create a page and follow the prompts.
- Upload an image to represent your brand. If you are looking to brand you, then a picture of yourself is a great choice for your avatar!
- Uncheck the options to share and like this page. This will allow you to make any changes before making your page live and visible to others. You can do these things later once you have made sure your page is the way you want it.
- Provide a link to your website, and give some information about you and/or your business.
- Now your page is set up! Check out the ideas under Get Started, which is the next page that you are taken to. You can start adding content, promoting your page, and more!
LinkedIn: The Social Network for Business Professionals
LinkedIn is often described as a more professional, clean version of Facebook that displays resume items without all of the games that Facebook has. This social network media has of over 101 million business users.
If you are looking to get started with LinkedIn for your business, you can get started by using a feature located on a sidebar called Profile Completion Steps. You will need to set up and complete a personal profile for yourself, your experience, knowledge, passion and information about your business. Remember to include all important information such as your website and blog URLs.
Having created your LinkedIn profiles, there are two major features in LinkedIn that have the capacity to really showcase you and your business in front of thousands of other professionals and employers.
The LinkedIn Groups feature allows LinkedIn users to create and participate in discussions around a topic within LinkedIn. They are kind of similar to Facebook Pages in that they provide businesses with an avenue for leading discussions on a topic of interest with members of the LinkedIn Group.
With Groups, you can really brand yourself by sharing expertise, make potential business connections, and it can also be a great place to promote content and grow your network.
Personally, I think LinkedIn Answer is the most powerful tool LinkedIn has to offer. It is a feature that allows professionals to ask and answer questions about any and every possible business topic.
The questions could be specific problem or need that your product or service could solve. If you are able to identify questions and provide answers by responding with a link to a resources or your blog article that answers that person’s question then you will be offering a great marketing opportunity for your business. Ultimately, you can generate high-quality traffic to your blog from LinkedIn Answers, and get some really qualified leads as well.
Having said all that, I must warn you that you have to keep a reign on how much time you spend on social networking site as it is quite easy to spend a very long time without you knowing.
